More domain names are in the hands of domain speculators, than are actually in use on the web.
This, of course, makes it harder for genuine domain seekers to find a good domain.
So 'used' domains are becoming more popular.
These are not the same as domains held by speculators. Speculators just buy say, thousands of domains that MAY potentially have a high value. They don't actually use those domains for web sites.

Used domains can be priced from a few dollars, to thousands of dollars for excellent domains.
Many of these domains may have been online for some years:
They may still be listed on Google. They may have existing traffic.
This could greatly assist one in getting a new web site going.

Try to get a domain with a relevant keyword in it: There is argument as to whether or not this still helps with Google listings, etc.
Experience shows that it usually does.
Domains with a hyphen in may be worth less that those without, but Google only sees the keywords in a domain.

Some domains will have web sites. These may suitable for re-branding with your own trade marks, etc.
